Kavieng offers a well rounded diving experience, with something for everyone.
Those who are looking for wreck diving are treated to both plane wrecks and a ship wreck when the conditions are right. A majority of the diveable wrecks are planes, remnants from WWII. The famous ship wreck dive of the area is actually a long-line fishing boat, the Der Yang, sitting at roughly 31 metres.
Lovers of pelagic action will be excited by the myriad of channel and wall dives that are home to large schools of barracuda, bigeye trevally and tuna. Other regulars include silver tip sharks, grey reef sharks, white tip sharks, black tip sharks, eagle rays and occasionally mobula rays. Some dive sites in the area can have a stronger current that brings an already bustling reef environment a heightened burst of activity. Not all sites have a strong current though, with many sites offering a more relaxed dive. If we do expect strong currents a safety line is run from the boat to the mooring where divers can hold on and enjoy the show.
Macro enthusiasts will also get their fill with many unique and interesting critters hiding amongst the coral lined reefscapes. Keen eyes will spot many types of nudibranch, frogfish, crocodilefish, pipefish, scorpionfish, waspfish and seahorses, decorator crabs. Occasionally divers are treated to mimic octopus.
